Which Florida Cities Report the Most Car Accidents?
Florida regularly ranks as one of the most dangerous states in the country for road users, as it is no stranger to serious car accidents. In fact, according to the Department of Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FHSMV), there were 394,945 collisions in our state in 2023 alone. Alarmingly, these car crashes resulted in 252,261 injuries and 3,401 fatalities. While these accidents occur in cities across the state, there are certain areas where collisions are more likely to happen.
Jacksonville
As the largest city in Florida, it should come as no surprise that Jacksonville also has one of the highest car accident rates in the state. In its seven counties, there were more than 34,000 car accidents in 2023, more than 22,000 of which resulted in some sort of injury.
Fort Lauderdale
Located just north of Miami and one of the most popular cities in the state of Florida among residents and visitors alike, Fort Lauderdale also sees its fair share of traffic congestion. Unfortunately, this also means that the area also experiences more car accidents than most Florida cities. Broward County, for example, which is home to Fort Lauderdale saw 40,175 accidents last year.
Orlando
The city of Orlando, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world also regularly tops the list of the most dangerous cities for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists. The increasing number of cars on the road and a rapidly aging infrastructure resulted in a total of 43,688 collisions in Orlando’s four counties in 2023.
Miami
Miami is another well-known hot spot in Florida, with the city continuing to grow every year. While it may be one of the economic hubs of the state and a destination for millions of visitors annually, this area poses a risk to road users of all types. In 2023, Miami-Dade County saw more than 63,792 car crashes.
Tampa
Consisting of eight counties, Tampa was recently rated the tenth worst city for drivers in the U.S., with more than 80,000 car crashes occurring in these counties last year. More than 56,000 of those accidents resulted in an injury. The same report revealed that the city had the eighth highest number of fatal car accidents, the ninth most car accident-related fatalities, and the 14th most fatal crashes caused by a distracted driver. Unfortunately, these collisions also involved many vulnerable road users, as there were more than 2,400 bicycle accidents in 2023. Prior to that year, this figure had never surpassed 1,800.
